Not The Joneses / Self-titled / Spire Records

This is not your "normal" independant record release! From the very beginning this album is loaded with terrific hook driven, straight-forward, modern rock music with a slight retro flavor. And it keeps getting better every time I put it in the CD player. If we had more bands with the talent of Not The Joneses there would be a lot more Christian bands in the mainstream market. The album literally grabbed me by the heart and spirit and made me thinks So, if you haven't guessed, I really like this album a lot.

Not The Joneses (NTJ) is a 4 member band from Chicago. Their grasp for for combining classic rock harmonies with modern rock arrangements and uplifting lyrics is very nice. The variety of styles and influences is inviting and covers at least 3 decades. They bring a much needed maturity to the Christian music industry at a time that it is needed most. There are some legitimate "HITS" on this album.

The band is very tight on the album and the production rivivals anything on the market right now. The highlight of the band has to be the blend of the vocal harmonies. They are as smooth as velvet and blend wonderfully with the combination of accoustic and electric instuments. The way this band is able to flow from all out rocker to ballad is extremely well done. Did I mention that I really like this album?

Lyrically, the band isn't preachy, but they do a great job letting the listener know what the music is all about. They have taken the worst of society and shown how God can affect it. The words let the listener know that it's not enough to say you are a Christian. You also have to be ready to walk that extra mile for Jesus. Everything from Aetheism to sex to drugs is fair game for Not The Jones. And they deal with all of these issues with an upfront and Christ-based state of mind.
